Originall...Tomorrow, 11 November, is Veterans Day. Originally called Armistice Day, it was established to commemorate the end of World War I--famously at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918--and 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of that worldwide conflict, The War to End All Wars, on 28 July 1914. Events all over the globe have been acknowledging that sad centennial, including the unveiling of a sea of red ceramic poppies, the symbol of the fatalities of that war, in what was once the moat of the Tower of London.

But this week also coincides with another anniversary, one that has more personal significance to me. The Berlin Wall, the visual (and palpable) symbol of the Cold War, was toppled 25 years ago yesterday, 9 November 1989. For some personal recollections of the Wall, I direct ROT readers to my 29 November 2009 post, "The Berlin Wall" (http://rickontheater.blogspot.com/2009/11/berlin-wall.html). A little of the Wall's history is recounted there as well.

~RickRickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164037407475532693noreply@blogger.com
